Student Loan Transfer and Status Verification
This transaction set enables the transfer and verification of student loan information between loan servicers, guarantors, and educational institutions. Typically sent by loan servicers or guarantee agencies in response to verification requests or during loan portfolio transfers, the X12 144 uses core segments including the BGN (Beginning Segment) to establish the transaction purpose and timeframe, the GR (Guarantee Result Detail) to communicate guarantee status or eligibility outcomes, and the LV (Loan Verification) segment to report specific loan details such as outstanding balance, interest rate, and repayment status. Supporting segments like DB (Disbursement Information) and IDB (Indebtedness for Student Loans) provide transaction-level details, while the ENT loop allows transmission of entity information for multiple borrowers or loan records in a single message.
In practice, when Cornerstone Loan Services needs to verify the status of federal student loans it services on behalf of the Department of Education, it sends an X12 144 to Great Lakes Guarantor (the guarantee agency) requesting confirmation of which loans remain under guarantee protection. Great Lakes responds with an X12 144 containing multiple ENT loops—one for each borrower—populated with GR segments indicating guarantee status, LV segments detailing current loan balances and repayment terms, and demographic information via IN2 and address segments so Cornerstone can reconcile its records and update borrower contact information as needed.
