824 Application Advice
Application Advice (824) is a transaction set used to communicate the receipt, acceptance, or rejection status of previously transmitted EDI documents or transactions. Typically sent by trading partners—such as suppliers, distributors, or service providers—in response to incoming EDI transmissions, it enables senders to confirm whether their data was successfully received and processed or to report problems that occurred. The transaction uses the BGN (Beginning Segment) to establish context for the advice being provided, the OTI (Original Transaction Identification) segment to reference the specific transaction(s) being acknowledged, and the TED (Technical Error Description) segment to detail any technical issues encountered during receipt or processing.
Consider a scenario where Acme Manufacturing receives a purchase order transmission from Global Retailers. Upon receipt, Acme’s EDI system processes the incoming file and generates an 824 Application Advice to send back to Global Retailers. If the purchase order was received cleanly and passed all validations, the 824 confirms successful receipt using the OTI segment to reference the original order number and transmission details. However, if Acme’s system detected data validation errors—such as an invalid product code or quantity value—the 824 would include TED segments that specifically describe each technical error found, allowing Global Retailers’ operations team to correct the data and resend the purchase order. This feedback loop ensures both parties maintain confidence in their EDI communications.
