Suppliers, manufacturers, or authorized parties send it to customers, regulatory bodies, or requesters who need to understand what components comprise a specific item. The ST (Transaction Set Header) and BGN (Beginning Segment) establish the transaction’s identity and context, while the LIN (Item Identification) segment within the unbounded detail loop identifies each component part. Supporting segments such as CRD (Content Reporting Detail) and CRV (Product Origin Reference) provide specifications and sourcing information for those components.

An automotive supplier might send an X12 871 to a major OEM detailing all component parts in a door assembly. The transmission would identify the door assembly through the LIN segment, then list each sub-component—hinges, latch mechanisms, glass panels, weather stripping—with their specifications in subsequent CRD segments and country-of-origin details in CRV segments. The N1 loop could reference the sub-suppliers or manufacturing locations for each component, while optional DTP segments might indicate when specific components were sourced or compliance dates. This enables the OEM to verify material sourcing, support traceability requirements, and manage supply chain risks for regulatory or quality purposes.
