The ENT (Entity) loop and its child segments, particularly EMS (Employment Position), convey specific employment status details including position information and employment dates through associated DTM (Date/Time Reference) segments.

For example, when an individual applies for unemployment benefits in Ohio, the state workforce agency sends an X12 540 to verify employment history with Acme Manufacturing Company. Acme’s HR system receives the transaction, which contains the employee’s name and identification in the NM1 loop and details about their employment status—such as job title, employment dates, and current employment position—within the ENT loop. The EMS segment specifies the employee’s role as “Full-Time Production Supervisor,” while DTM segments mark the hire date and separation date. Acme’s system responds by confirming these details within the allowable timeframe, enabling the state agency to process the unemployment claim accurately.
