451 Railroad Event Report
This transaction set enables railroad carriers and operators to report events related to rail equipment and operations to receiving parties such as shippers, receivers, consignees, or other railroad entities. Sent in response to inquiries or as part of standard event notification workflows, the 451 Railroad Event Report uses the ST (Transaction Set Header) segment to initiate the transmission, the ER (Rail Event Reporting) segment to document specific operational events, and the ED (Equipment Description) segment to identify the rail equipment involved in each reported event. The transaction set can accommodate multiple equipment records through its repeating ED Loop structure, allowing detailed tracking of various cars, locomotives, or other rail assets within a single transmission.
For example, BNSF Railway might use this transaction set to report to J.B. Hunt Transport Services that a shipment’s railcar has arrived at an intermodal yard and is ready for pickup. Within the ED Loop, BNSF would identify the specific equipment using the ED segment, document the arrival event in the ER segment, and optionally provide cross-reference information via the NA segment or location routing details through the CLR segment. If the car’s status has changed (such as being loaded or repositioned), the ES (Equipment Status) segment would reflect that current condition, enabling J.B. Hunt to coordinate their drayage operations accordingly.
