Production Sequence

This transaction set communicates production and shipping schedules from suppliers or manufacturers to their customers or distribution partners. Typically sent in response to purchase orders or blanket agreements, the 866 enables suppliers to inform buyers about planned production quantities and delivery dates. The BSS (Beginning Segment for Shipping Schedule/Production Sequence) segment establishes the document’s purpose and references, while the mandatory DTM (Date/Time Reference) loop specifies the timing of scheduled production or shipment activities. The optional LIN (Item Identification) loop within each date/time sequence identifies specific products, their quantities, and associated details through segments like QTY (Quantity) and PID (Product/Item Description).

Consider a scenario where Acme Manufacturing receives a purchase order from RetailCorp for 5,000 units of widget model XYZ, with flexibility on delivery timing. Acme responds with an 866 transaction set specifying its production schedule: 2,000 units scheduled for shipment on March 15, 1,500 units on March 22, and 1,500 units on March 29. Each date appears as a separate DTM loop entry, and within each date block, the LIN loop identifies the specific product (model XYZ), the QTY segment confirms the quantity for that shipment window, and optional N1/N3 segments provide warehouse or dock location details. This allows RetailCorp to align its receiving and inventory planning with Acme’s confirmed production capability.
