Rate Request

Used to solicit pricing information for transportation or logistics services, the 466 transaction set is typically sent by shippers, freight forwarders, or logistics coordinators to carriers or rate providers. It may be transmitted in response to a carrier’s rate quote availability or as a standalone inquiry to obtain current rates for planned shipments. The REN (Rate Request Information) segment contains core details about the rate inquiry, while the PR1 and PR2 (Price Request Parameter List) segments allow the requester to specify detailed pricing criteria and conditions. The optional DK (Docket Header) segment can reference regulatory or regulatory docket information relevant to the rate request.

For example, Midwest Distributors might send a 466 rate request to TransContinental Freight Lines to obtain pricing for shipping pallets of consumer goods from Chicago to Los Angeles. The rate request would specify shipping parameters through the PR1 and PR2 segments—such as weight, dimensions, freight class, and required transit time—enabling TransContinental to calculate an accurate quote. By using the 466 format, Midwest Distributors can automate rate inquiries across multiple carriers and consolidate responses, improving procurement efficiency compared to manual phone or email requests.
