864 Text Message
This transaction set enables the transmission of formatted text messages between trading partners in a structured EDI format. Typically sent by any organization needing to communicate text-based information to a receiving partner, the 864 Text Message carries free-form or semi-structured content that doesn’t fit into other specialized transaction sets. The BMG (Beginning Segment for Text Message) segment initiates the message and establishes its context, while the MIT (Message Identification) segment structures individual message units within the transmission. Multiple MSG (Message Text) segments can convey the actual text content, allowing senders to communicate operational notices, alerts, or other non-transactional information through the EDI channel.
Consider a scenario where TechSupply Inc. sends an 864 transaction to RetailChain Corp. to notify them of an urgent production delay affecting a scheduled shipment. TechSupply’s EDI system generates the 864 with BMG segment details identifying the message type and urgency level, followed by one or more MIT/MSG segment pairs containing the notification text. The receiving RetailChain system processes the message, extracts the delay information, and alerts their supply chain team. Optional N1 loops within the message allow TechSupply to include specific contact information or department names, ensuring the message reaches the correct recipient without requiring a separate communication channel.
