Underwriting Information Services

This transaction set facilitates the exchange of underwriting information between insurance companies, agents, brokers, and related service providers. Typically sent in response to an underwriting request or inquiry, the X12 255 enables the transmission of detailed applicant and account information necessary for policy evaluation and risk assessment. The structure organizes data through three primary segments: the BGN (Beginning Segment) establishes the transaction context and purpose, the ACT (Account Identification) segment identifies specific accounts or policies under review, and the mandatory NM1 (Individual or Organizational Name) segments embedded within account loops capture information about individuals and organizations involved in the underwriting process. The transaction also accommodates supporting documentation references via the PWK (Paperwork) segment and applicant characteristics through demographic and multi-valued data segments.

Consider an insurance underwriting scenario where XYZ Insurance Company receives a policy application from ABC Insurance Agency for a commercial liability account. XYZ responds with an X12 255 transaction containing the applicant’s company details in the header NM1 loop, followed by an ACT loop that references the specific policy account number. Within that account loop, nested NM1 loops provide information on the applicant organization and key principals, while LX loops detail individual risk factors, employment history via EMS, property characteristics via REC, and demographic details through DMG and IND segments. Supporting documentation requirements are noted in PWK segments, underwriting questions are posed through YNQ segments, and any additional instructions or findings are communicated via MSG (Message Text) segments, creating a comprehensive information exchange to support the underwriting decision.
