Product Registration (140) is an EDI transaction set used to formally register products within a supply chain or regulatory framework. Manufacturers and distributors typically send this transaction to trading partners, regulatory bodies, or central product databases to establish product records and ensure compliance with industry requirements. The BGN (Beginning Segment) initiates the registration request with transaction purpose and date information, while the N1 (Name) segments in the heading identify key parties involved—such as the registering company, product owner, or regulatory contact. Within the detail section, the LIN (Item Identification) segment identifies each specific product being registered, accompanied by product descriptions via the PID (Product/Item Description) segment, enabling comprehensive product data exchange.

For example, Acme Pharmaceuticals sends a Product Registration (140) transaction to the FDA’s electronic system to register a new medication line. The heading section identifies Acme as the registrant and includes contact information through the N1 and PER (Administrative Communications Contact) segments. Within the detail loops, each drug formulation is identified using LIN, with clinical and packaging details provided through PID segments. Additional product-specific information—such as approval dates captured in DTM (Date/Time Reference) segments and regulatory reference numbers in REF (Reference Identification) segments—ensures the FDA receives complete registration data for each product variant in a single, structured transmission.
