This transaction set communicates pricing updates and price list information from a seller to a buyer or distributor. Suppliers, manufacturers, and wholesalers typically send the Price Information transaction to retail chains, distributors, and trading partners to notify them of current or changed pricing. The transmission is commonly initiated following a price change event, a request for updated pricing, or as part of a periodic price maintenance cycle. The G91 (Price Change Status) segment indicates whether prices are new, updated, or superseding previous information, while the N1 (Name) segment within the mandatory Loop 0100 identifies the party receiving the price list. The G62 (Date/Time) segment establishes the effective date for the pricing being communicated.

For example, Acme Foods may use the 879 transaction to send updated wholesale prices to SaveMart Distribution. The message would include Acme Foods as the sender and SaveMart Distribution identified in the N1 segment. Within Loop 0200, individual products (such as SKU 7891-X for canned beans) are listed using the G28 (Line Item Numbers) segment, with their new unit prices specified in the G22 (Pricing Information) segment. The G46 (Promotion Allowance/Charge) segment could reflect a temporary promotional discount for bulk purchases, and the G62 date would confirm that all pricing becomes effective on the first of the following month. SaveMart’s procurement system receives and processes this transaction to update its internal pricing database and ensure accurate billing on incoming invoices.
