Shipment Status Inquiry (Ocean)
A shipment status inquiry for ocean transportation allows shippers, freight forwarders, or consignees to request current information about the status of ocean shipments from ocean carriers or shipping service providers. The inquiry originates from parties needing visibility into their cargo’s location and condition during transit. The transaction uses the B4 (Beginning Segment for Inquiry or Reply) segment to establish the inquiry parameters, the N9 (Reference Identification) segment to provide shipment identifiers such as bill of lading numbers or booking references, and the N1 (Name) segment to identify the parties involved in the shipment, allowing the carrier to pinpoint which specific cargo movement is being questioned.
For example, ABC Import Company submits a shipment status inquiry to Pacific Shipping Lines to track a containerized shipment of electronics. ABC references the ocean bill of lading number and their booking reference in the N9 segments, identifies itself and the consignee in the N1 segments, and requests current status information. Pacific Shipping Lines receives the inquiry through the B4 segment parameters and uses the reference identifiers to locate the shipment in their systems, then responds with the current location, estimated time of arrival, and any relevant status updates about the cargo in transit.
