Shipment Information

This transaction set communicates shipment information for freight movements across multiple transportation modes. The shipper or transportation provider sends it to freight brokers, carriers, consignees, or logistics partners to relay details about goods in transit. The BX (General Shipment Information) segment provides core shipment identifiers and movement data, while the HL (Hierarchical Level) loops organize equipment, commodities, and shipment components into a structured hierarchy. Supporting segments like N9 (Reference Identification) enable cross-referencing to related documents such as purchase orders or bills of lading, and H3 (Special Handling Instructions) communicates any unique handling requirements for the freight.

Consider a scenario where TruckLogistics Inc. ships a consolidated load of automotive parts from Detroit to Atlanta on behalf of three different shippers. TruckLogistics sends an 858 to its freight management partner, FreightTrack Solutions, detailing the consolidated shipment in the BX segment. Within the HL loops, it specifies three equipment sections—one for each trailer in the combination—and under each equipment section, it includes multiple commodity line items with their weights via L0 segments and any hazardous material details through LH1 loops. The transaction set references the original shipper names and addresses in the N1 loop and includes pickup and destination information, allowing FreightTrack Solutions to track the shipment’s progress and coordinate final delivery to each consignee.
