317 Delivery/Pickup Order

This transaction set is used to communicate delivery and pickup orders for freight and goods movement. A shipper, distributor, or logistics coordinator sends a 317 to a carrier or warehouse facility to request the pickup or delivery of merchandise at specified locations. The message structure centers on three key segments: the N1 (Name) segment, which identifies the parties involved such as the shipper, consignee, and warehouse; the G62 (Date/Time) segment, which specifies when the pickup or delivery should occur; and the L0 (Line Item - Quantity and Weight) segment, which itemizes the goods being moved, including quantities and weights. The TD5 (Carrier Details) segment captures routing and transit information relevant to the movement.

For example, a regional food distributor might send a 317 to a third-party logistics provider requesting pickup of 50 cases of frozen products from its warehouse on Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM, with delivery to three retail locations by end of business. The 317 would contain one N1 loop identifying the distributor as the shipper, the logistics provider as the carrier, and each retail location as a consignee, along with complete address information via N3 (Address Information) and N4 (Geographic Location) segments. Multiple L0 loops would detail each product line—for instance, one loop for the frozen items with quantity 50 and another for accompanying packaging materials—while G62 confirms the pickup time and any associated delivery windows.
