Advance Car Disposition

This transaction communicates the planned positioning and disposition of rail cars before they arrive at their destination. Railroads and car owners send the 419 to consignees, freight forwarders, and distribution centers to provide advance notice of incoming car movements. The transmission typically follows the dispatch or routing of empty or loaded cars and enables receiving parties to prepare facilities and labor. The E6 segment (Advance Car Disposition) forms the core of each car record, specifying the car identification and its status. The W3 segment (Consignee Information) identifies the receiving party for that specific car, while the W5 segment (Route Information) conveys routing details such as the expected arrival point or transit method.

Consider a scenario where Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad uses the 419 to notify a food distribution center in Chicago that three boxcars of grain shipments are en route. For each car, BNSF transmits an E6 record with the car number and disposition status, followed by a W3 segment naming the distribution center as consignee, and a W5 segment indicating the car will arrive at the Chicago rail yard on the afternoon of Thursday. This advance notice allows the distribution center to schedule dock workers and staging areas before the cars physically arrive, streamlining the unloading process and reducing demurrage delays.
