Rail Rate Reply
This transaction set enables rail carriers to respond with rate quotations and freight charges following a rate inquiry. A rail carrier transmits a Rail Rate Reply to a shipper, freight forwarder, or other requesting party in direct response to a rate request. The transaction uses three primary segments to communicate this information: the ST (Transaction Set Header) identifies and initiates the message, the REN (Rate Request Information) segment establishes the context linking this reply to the original rate inquiry, and the DK (Docket Header) segment within the optional DK Loop provides details about specific rate quotes, with NTE (Note/Special Instruction) segments available to clarify terms, conditions, or special handling requirements for each rate offering.
Consider a scenario where Midwest Logistics submits a rate inquiry to Consolidated Rail Services for shipping automotive parts from Chicago to Detroit. Consolidated Rail Services responds with an X12 463 message containing the ST header, followed by REN segment data that references Midwest Logistics’ original request. Within the DK Loop, Consolidated Rail Services includes multiple DK segments representing different service options—standard rail service, expedited rail service, and intermodal options—each with associated rates and surcharges. For the expedited option, an NTE segment clarifies that the rate includes fuel surcharges current as of the quote date and specifies a 30-day rate validity period. The SE trailer closes the transaction, confirming all rate alternatives have been transmitted to Midwest Logistics for evaluation.
