Train Sheet

This transaction set communicates train consist and operational information during rail transportation movements. Railroads and rail operators send Train Sheet transactions to shippers, receivers, and logistics partners to provide detailed documentation about train composition, routing, and handling requirements. The BTS (Beginning Segment for Train Sheets) segment establishes the core train information, while the FAC (Facing Direction) loop structure accommodates multiple facing directions that may apply to different segments of the train consist. Optional V9 (Event Detail) segments throughout the document capture specific operational events or milestones, and H3 (Special Handling Instructions) segments enable the transmission of any unique handling requirements that apply at the train or individual facing level.

Consider a scenario where Union Pacific Railroad prepares a Train Sheet for a mixed freight movement destined for a distribution center operated by XPO Logistics. The railroad uses the BTS segment to identify the train number, departure point, and destination, then populates the FAC loop multiple times to describe different car groups within the consist—for example, one facing direction for refrigerated cars carrying perishables and another for standard boxcars. Union Pacific includes V9 segments to note that the refrigerated section requires continuous temperature monitoring, and adds H3 segments specifying that certain hazardous material cars must be positioned away from populated areas. XPO Logistics receives this Train Sheet to plan yard operations, sequencing, and safe unload procedures before the train arrives.
