Rail Advance Interchange Consist

Rail Advance Interchange Consist (418) is a transaction used to communicate detailed information about railcars being assembled into a consist before movement. Typically sent by a railroad or rail intermodal facility to receiving parties such as connecting railroads, rail yards, or logistics coordinators, this transaction provides advance notice of equipment and cargo composition. The message is generally transmitted in anticipation of physical rail movement or in response to consist-building requests. Key segments include the BAX (Beginning Segment for Advance Consist and Transportation Automatic Equipment ID), which establishes the overall consist parameters; the W1 (Block Identification) segment, which organizes railcars into logical blocks; and the W2 (Equipment Identification) segment, which identifies individual pieces of equipment and their attributes.

Consider a scenario where Northern Rail Yard in Chicago is assembling a consist of 30 railcars destined for consolidation at a distribution hub. Northern Rail sends a 418 transaction to Midwest Intermodal Services, detailing each car’s ID, origin, destination, and cargo type through repeated W2 segments. For cars carrying hazardous materials, Northern Rail includes nested hazard segments (LH1, LH2, LH3) to communicate regulatory requirements. Special handling instructions appear in W6 segments for temperature-controlled containers, while W5 segments specify the routing through intermediate rail points. Upon receipt, Midwest Intermodal uses the 418 to pre-position equipment, alert security for hazmat shipments, and verify receiving dock availability before the consist arrives.
