Product Activity Data

Product Activity Data (852) is a transaction set used to report ongoing product movement, inventory activity, and related information at the item level. Typically sent from distributors, retailers, or other trading partners to suppliers or manufacturers, it provides detailed visibility into how products are performing in the marketplace. The transaction conveys activity data through mandatory segments including the XQ (Reporting Date/Action) segment, which establishes the time period and nature of the activity being reported, and the ZA (Product Activity Reporting) segment, which contains the actual activity metrics. The LIN (Item Identification) segment identifies which products the activity data pertains to, allowing suppliers to track performance across their product portfolio.

For example, a major retailer like Best Buy might send an 852 transaction to its electronics supplier Samsung to report weekly product activity data. The transmission would identify specific SKUs in the LIN segments—such as a particular 55-inch television model—and then use the ZA loops to report quantities sold, promotional activity codes, or other performance metrics for that reporting week. Samsung receives this activity intelligence, which helps them forecast demand, manage inventory at their warehouses, and adjust production schedules. The 852 gives suppliers the near-real-time visibility they need to respond effectively to actual market conditions rather than relying solely on purchase orders.
