Item Maintenance
This transaction set is used to add, modify, or delete item information maintained in trading partner catalogs or product databases. Suppliers or manufacturers send item maintenance messages to retailers, distributors, or other trading partners who receive and process product master data. The message is typically sent proactively or in response to a request for catalog updates. The N1 (Name) segment identifies the trading partner entities involved, the G53 (Maintenance Type) segment specifies whether the action is an add, change, or delete operation, and the G39 (Item Characteristics—Vendor’s Selling Unit) segment defines the specific product being maintained along with its core attributes.
For example, a food manufacturer like Fresh Harvest Foods would send an 888 message to a regional grocery chain to update the product information for a newly reformulated organic juice. The message would include Fresh Harvest as the sender in the heading loop, the grocery chain as the receiver, a maintenance type of “change,” and the G39 segment would contain the UPC, item description, and case quantity for the vendor’s selling unit. Additional detail segments would provide pricing, promotion terms, hazardous material warnings if applicable, and measurements such as case weight and dimensions. The grocery chain’s system would receive this file, validate it against their item master, and update their internal database accordingly.
