863 Report of Test Results

This transaction set communicates detailed findings from laboratory testing, quality inspections, or product evaluations. Testing laboratories, manufacturers, or third-party inspection firms send the 863 to purchasers, suppliers, or regulatory bodies to report results from requested or required testing. It typically responds to a purchase order, testing request, or compliance requirement. The BTR (Beginning Segment for Test Results) establishes the test report’s context, while the MEA (Measurements) segments document the actual test values and findings. The LIN (Item Identification) loop allows the sender to organize results by individual line items or product samples, each with its own measurements, test methods, and associated notes.

For example, AccuTest Labs might send an 863 to Superior Manufacturing after testing a batch of plastic components. The report uses the BTR to identify the test date and report number, then includes one LIN loop per component type tested. Within each loop, multiple MEA segments record tensile strength, temperature resistance, and dimensional tolerances, while REF segments link back to Superior’s original purchase order numbers. NTE segments add clarifications such as “Result exceeds specification” or “Recommend retesting sample C.” Geographic and contact information in the N1 loop identifies AccuTest’s lab location and the responsible technician, enabling Superior’s quality team to follow up if needed.
