Price/Sales Catalog

Suppliers and distributors send the 832 transaction set to communicate product pricing and catalog information to their customers or trading partners. Buyers receive this document to update their internal systems with current product offerings, pricing structures, and availability terms. The transaction may be sent proactively as a catalog update or in response to a catalog request. The BCT (Beginning Segment for Price/Sales Catalog) segment opens the transaction and identifies the catalog, while the CTP (Pricing Information) segment appears multiple times throughout to convey prices for products at various quantity levels and conditions. The LIN (Item Identification) segment initiates detailed product records within the catalog, allowing each item to carry its own specifications, restrictions, and pricing tiers.

Consider a distributor such as Applied Industrial Solutions sending a catalog update to a manufacturing customer, Midwest Assembly Corp. The 832 transmission contains hundreds of line items representing industrial fasteners and components. For a product like stainless steel bolts, the LIN segment identifies the item, PID segments describe the material and finish specifications, multiple CTP segments under the CTP loop provide tiered pricing (for example, $0.85 per unit at quantities 1–100, $0.72 per unit at 101–500, $0.60 per unit at 500+), and DTM segments note the effective date of the price list. The N1 loop provides Midwest Assembly’s shipping address so Applied Industrial knows where to send orders, while SAC segments may flag volume discounts or promotional allowances. When Midwest Assembly receives the 832, it loads the catalog data into its procurement system, ensuring purchasing staff see accurate, current pricing when placing orders.
