Envelope Application Codes Now Go Into GS02 And GS03

Outbound documents now put each envelope’s application code in GS02 and GS03 instead of copying the ISA IDs, and 997s answer with the GS codes the partner sent.

Impact: every existing envelope has an application code equal to its interchange ID, so the EDI you send does not change. If a partner has asked for a GS code that differs from an interchange ID, yours or theirs, set Application Code on that envelope. Partners whose own GS codes differ from their ISA IDs will now see those codes reversed in the GS header of your 997s.

How the codes are chosen:

  • GS02 is your internal envelope’s application code, and GS03 is the partner’s external envelope’s application code.
  • A blank application code is set to the interchange ID. While the two match, editing the interchange ID updates the application code too. A code you have set to a different value stays put when the ID changes.
  • A code that differs from the interchange ID must be 2 to 15 characters, and on an external envelope it cannot contain any of that envelope’s separators.
  • When an outbound API call overrides interchangeSenderId or interchangeReceiverId, the GS code on that side is the override ID, as before. There is no separate override for GS codes.
  • A 997 takes its GS02 from the inbound group’s GS03 and its GS03 from the inbound group’s GS02. If the partner’s code is not 2 to 15 characters long or contains one of the separators the 997 is written with, the 997 uses the envelope codes instead.
  • On inbound results, x12.sender.applicationCode and x12.receiver.applicationCode now come from the transaction set’s own functional group. They used to come from the interchange’s first group, so only files with more than one group report different values.

Limits:

  • Inbound files are still matched to a partner on ISA IDs alone. Two partners that share an ISA sender and receiver pair cannot be told apart by their GS codes. If you need to route on GS codes, read the applicationCode fields in the delivered payload.

Envelope settings are described in the envelope docs.
